The journey of split green peas spans centuries. Originating in Southeast Asia, these green legumes eventually reached Europe and the Americas.
The beloved Split Green Pea Soup has stood the test of time, enchanting ancient Greek and Roman palates and continuing to delight modern-day cooks.
In Venezuela, for example, this soup became my cherished favorite because of its simplicity, robust flavors, and nourishing qualities. Creamy and slightly sweet, prepared with smoked pork chops or smoked pork neck bones, it never failed to captivate both loved ones and guests.
The first time I cooked this soup in America, my husband, born and raised in the South, spoke aloud. "Green split pea soup, I love it!"
It seems like Split Green Pea Soup has always been part of Southern US cuisine."
In this recipe, I used bacon, but you can explore the option of smoked pork neck bones or ham. Consider making a generous batch and storing the extras in a ziplock bag for future enjoyment.

Ingredients:
Easy Split Green Pea Soup Recipe
- 1 lb of green split peas
- 12 oz of center-cut bacon
- 3 carrots
- 2 stalks of celery
- 2 garlic cloves
- 4 sweet peppers
- 1 onion
- 2 Russet potatoes
- 1 tsp of cumin
- Approximately 1 tbsp of salt
- 1/4 tsp of pepper
- 7 cups of water

Directions:
1.- Begin by carefully inspecting the dried peas, removing impurities like small stones or soil particles.

2.- To prepare the dried green peas, you have two options: soak them overnight in 4 cups of water or use the faster method by boiling them in 8 cups of water for 2 minutes and then setting them aside for 1 hour.

3.- Cut the bacon into small, bite-sized pieces.

4.- Dice the potatoes into small, evenly-sized cubes. Additionally, finely chop the onion, peppers, carrots, and celery. Mince the garlic cloves.

5.- In a 14 or 16-quart pot, heat the bacon over medium heat until it becomes slightly browned and releases its grease, which should take about 5 minutes.

6.- Add the Sofrito ingredients and allow them to sauté with the bacon until they caramelize, which should take approximately 10 minutes.

7.- Next, add the soaked peas, carrots, and potatoes to the pot.
8.- Pour in the water and thoroughly combine all the ingredients.

9.- Season the soup with cumin, salt, and pepper. Taste the soup and adjust the salt if needed.

10.- Allow the soup to cook for about 25 minutes, partially covered with a lid, and then cook for an additional 10 minutes uncovered. Stir the soup occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
